The panel shows a layered sedimentary sequence overlying a harder rock type that acts as the acoustic basement. The topmost 50-100ms of the sedimentary sequence is much darker and represents regionally extensive glacial deposits of the last few million years. The lower sediments, acoustically more transparent, represent a time interval of several tens of millions of years. On the left these sediments show complex bedding which is probably indicative of shallower water and more vigorous currents than are present today. The deep gullies in the sea-bed imply that modern currents keep the gullies free of sediments. On the right there are very small sea-bed depressions overlying columns of disturbance in the underlying sediments formed by the de-watering of the deeper sediments as they are compressed by the ever-increasing weight of the overburden.
